All things wars and vixen. Thought it was going to be more complicated, eh?
Every year, I travel to the largest medieval reenactment events in the world. There's others, but the largest being that of Pennsic War. Every year it takes place in Western Pennsylvania and it lasts for 16 days in late July/early August.
About 10,000 to 12,000 people show up for the event, and I've been lucky enough to call it my home for decades as I had started going when I was a child with my father. The event itself consists of hundreds of groups that camp together to make up the unique landscape and diverse population of what becomes it's own town, mayor and all, for those two weeks.
So, what is there to do at war? Classes, there's hundreds of them! Shopping, also hundreds of merchants! Fancy seeing a battle or two? Well, they have those as well with large scale field battles taking place daily during the second week, aka "War Week". Of course, what long running event would be worth its salt if it didn't have parties at night? Well, Pennsic has you covered there as well, and I can tell you from my experience...there's nothing like them anywhere. Not to mention, falling asleep to the drums as they go on until the late hours of the morning is truly magical.
And that's what the event is.
For me? It's so much more. It's my "mecca", my home, and where I see people that I consider friends and family. It's an escape, a time to reflect, relax, and maybe get up to some mischief when and where the opportunity arises.
Right now, I am raising funds in order to get to Pennsic War 49, 50, and beyond! Maybe even other events too, but Pennsic is my main priority because so much work goes into it and it's so important to me.
After Pennsic 47 in 2018, I had to ditch a lot of my camping supplies as they were old, worn out, and just down right tired at that point. Not to mention, I didn't have the room in my car to get them back along with other things I needed to get out of storage permanently.
My big goals right now, and in no particular order...
- More garb (always more garb but I do need a lot more)
- Tent (looking a modern canvas tent, but period in style somewhat as well)
- Coolers (to keep drinks, medicine, and snacks in)
- Bedding (I'm really not able to do the air mattress route anymore, so needing to upgrade)
- Lighting (mostly of the LED variety for inside the tent)
- Car repairs (so I can get there safely and back)
- Random quality of life items (there's too many to list really)
That's the big list of things really. And yes, none of that is really cheap. Overall, it's going to cost a couple of thousand to get everything sorted most likely, and that's just the way of it. The tent alone is the bulk of the cost at around $1200. This is something that's so necessary due to needing an arrangement that's nicer than just a nylon pop up tent. They work in a pinch, but would love something nicer and more durable in the long run.
However, most of the other items will last for years as well! It's also why I'm starting early on the fundraising for this, as we're over a year out until the next war I'll be able to make.
